Cosmic Ray Processes in Galactic Ecosystems

چکیده

Galaxy evolution is an important topic, and our physical understanding must be complete to establish a correct picture. This includes thorough treatment of feedback. The effects thermal–mechanical radiative feedback have been widely considered; however, cosmic rays (CRs) are also powerful energy carriers in galactic ecosystems. Resolving the capability CRs operate as agent therefore essential advance processes regulating galaxies. yet fully understood, their complex multi-channel mechanisms operating across hierarchy galaxy structures pose significant technical challenge. review examines role galaxies, from scale molecular clouds circumgalactic medium. An overview interaction processes, implications for evolution, observable signatures provided modify thermal hydrodynamic configuration ecosystems discussed. We present recent advancements CR interpretation signatures, highlight where challenges unresolved questions persist. discuss how these may addressed with upcoming opportunities.

Time Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation

Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...

The galactic cosmic ray ionization rate.

The chemistry that occurs in the interstellar medium in response to cosmic ray ionization is summarized, and a review of the ionization rates that have been derived from measurements of molecular abundances is presented. The successful detection of large abundances of H(3)(+) in diffuse clouds and the recognition that dissociative recombination of H(3)(+) is fast has led to an upward revision o...

The Revival of Galactic Cosmic Ray Nucleosynthesis?

Because of the roughly linear correlation between Be/H and Fe/H in low metallicity halo stars, it has been argued that a “primary” component in the nucleosynthesis of Be must be present in addition to the “secondary” component from standard Galactic cosmic ray nucleosynthesis. In this paper we critically re-evaluate the evidence for the primary versus secondary character of Li, Be, and B evolut...

Models for Galactic Cosmic-ray Propagation

A new numerical model of particle propagation in the Galaxy has been developed, which allows the study of cosmic-ray and gamma-ray production and propagation in 2D or 3D, including a full reaction network. This is a further development of the code which has been used for studies of cosmic ray reacceleration, Galactic halo size, antiprotons and positrons in cosmic rays, the interpretation of dif...

Isotopic Composition of Galactic Cosmic Ray Nuclei

Galactic cosmic rays represent a directly accessible sample of matter that originates outside the solar system, The elemental and isotopic composition of this sample of high-energy matter contains a record of nucleosynthesis in other regions of the galaxy, and of subsequent nuclear and electromagnetic interactions that have altered its composition. There have recently been significant new advan...
